Living Your Dream

Cheryl Ennis

“The only thing that shatters dreams is compromise.” – Richard Bach

Are you living the life of your dreams? How about your career? Is it the career of your dreams (or at least on the path to becoming so)?

I suspect many of you say no. I also suspect that many of you will object to the above quote. Of course we have to compromise in life. When our spouse wants Chinese food and we want a burger, we have to find an acceptable solution. We might have to compromise. We might have plans with friends for the evening, but our kid is sick. We might have to compromise our wants with our responsibilities. Fair enough.

But do we really need to compromise our deepest desires for success and fulfillment? I would argue that we do not. As a matter of fact, I would argue that this kind of compromise leads to an unhappy life. I can’t imagine that we came into this world for the purpose of “getting by”, settling, or otherwise compromising our dreams and our purpose. What would be the point of that?

I maintain that if we are truly committed to our deepest desires, we can achieve them. Yes, there may be some hard work involved, but hard work should always have a point. The road through our working life, and life in general, may take many twists and turns, and even pass through a deep valley or two, but should always lead us toward our most successful and fulfilling outcomes.

It’s like gps, taking us to our desired destination but through roads and communities with which we are unfamiliar. We follow the directions, even when we have no idea where we are, but we have faith that the path is correct and the outcome certain. Please don’t get discouraged and stop in a dangerous neighborhood. Trust your dream to lead you where you’re trying to go.

Are you lost? Are you a mid-career and feeling like you aren’t where you’d like to be in your career? Do you feel like you’re undervalued and overworked? Have you compromised your dreams?

You deserve to live the life of your dreams. It’s never too late to start.
